Emmeline Forrestal

Originally from the great state of Wisconsin, I’m an illustrator, author, and all-around lover of books! After earning a B.A. in Theatrical Costume Design from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2002, I went on to work as a wig maker at the world-renowned Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis before making the transition to the book industry. A member of SCBWI since 2011, I have presented workshops, served as an SCBWI Illustrator Mentor, and received numerous recognitions, the most recent of which was an honorable mention at the SCBWI-San Diego Mayfest Portfolio Showcase (2021.)

In addition to my theater background, I also spent several years working as a children’s library technician. I know the ins and outs of a good story time and have had a front row seat into what makes a child excited (or not!) about a particular book.

Primarily a self-taught artist, I work digitally in ProCreate but have years of experience in traditional media including watercolor, markers, pencils, charcoal, pastels, acrylics, and gouache. My strong linework and quirky characters give a nod to favorite artists such as Trina Schart Hyman, Lisbeth Zwerger, and Victor Ambrus. I am interested in books for all age groups and genres, from picture books to YA covers. I’ve got a special place in my heart for creepy settings, odd characters, sarcastic humor, and historical tales (including nonfiction.)

I currently live with my family in Southern California.
